TORNABARAKONY series by Mariann Fercsik
Part of Photomonth. East London Photography Festival 2010

A vibrant bohemian tea house TeaSmith hosts an exhibition by Mariann Fercsik. The artist documented the lives of village inhabitants in East Hungary and its rural environment. Tornabarakony is a remote village with twelve inhabitants. Each of them has a profound story. The mix of portraits and landscape photographs are warm and moving. Close observation reveals strong sense of religion. The presence of local deacon, grannies holding necklaces, the cathedral – indicates an intimate connection with God.

There is a notion of hidden beauty in the photographic composition. Even though the cottages may not reflect comfort or an amusing place to say. Often it is the rustic and worn out side that is appealing. The images attempt to draw us back by looking it with a different perspective. What is home? Where is it? The village’s empty pathways, unsteady terraces and residents’ reserved features imply sadness. Perhaps it indicates the missing young blood in the village. Currently they have each other and faith, until the village vanishes.
